Big Max Pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima) is a giant heirloom variety prized for its massive size and smooth, bright orange skin. Known for producing pumpkins weighing up to 100 pounds or more, Big Max is perfect for fall displays, carving, and competitions. The slightly ribbed, round fruits have thick, dense flesh that can also be used for cooking and baking. This vigorous vining plant thrives in warm, sunny conditions and requires plenty of space to spread out.

Growing Instructions

Start Big Max Pumpkin seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost date or direct-sow outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 70°F. Sow seeds 1 inch deep in rich, well-draining soil. Space plants 3–5 feet apart in rows 8–12 feet apart, as the vines will sprawl significantly. Pumpkins thrive in full sun and require consistent moisture, especially during fruit development. Mulch to retain soil moisture and reduce weeds. To achieve maximum size, allow only one or two fruits per vine and provide ample space for growth. Harvest when the pumpkin’s skin is hard and uniformly orange.
