Boston Pickling Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is a classic heirloom variety renowned for its crisp texture, uniform size, and excellent pickling qualities. These vigorous, productive plants yield an abundance of 3–6 inch, dark green cucumbers that are slightly tapered at the ends, making them ideal for both whole and sliced pickles. Their mild, slightly tangy flavor and firm flesh also make them perfect for fresh eating and adding crunch to salads. Boston Pickling Cucumbers thrive in warm weather and produce continuously throughout the summer.

Growing Instructions

Direct-sow Boston Pickling Cucumber seeds outdoors after the last frost when soil temperatures reach at least 70°F. Plant seeds 1 inch deep and 6 inches apart in rows or mounds, spacing rows 3–4 feet apart. Thin seedlings to one plant every 12–18 inches. Provide a trellis or support to encourage vertical growth and increase airflow, reducing disease risk. Keep soil consistently moist but well-drained to maintain crisp, flavorful cucumbers. Harvest when fruits reach 3–6 inches in length for the best pickling quality and texture. Regular harvesting encourages continued production.
