Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) is a classic heirloom variety known for its pointed, conical heads and tender, mild flavor. These compact, tightly wrapped heads weigh about 2–4 pounds, making them perfect for small gardens and tight planting spaces. As one of the earliest maturing cabbages, it is prized for its reliable yields and excellent cold tolerance, making it an ideal choice for early spring or fall planting. The crisp, sweet leaves are perfect for fresh eating, coleslaw, and light cooking.

Growing Instructions

Start Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep by pressing them into the ground (cabbage seeds germinate faster when exposed to light) in seed-starting mix, keeping temperatures around 60–70°F. Transplant seedlings outdoors when they reach 4–6 inches in height and the soil has warmed. Space plants 12–18 inches apart in rows 24–30 inches apart. Cabbage prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade, thriving with consistent moisture. Mulch around plants to keep the soil cool and moist. Harvest when heads are firm, compact, and about 6–8 inches in diameter. Cut at the base with a sharp knife.
