Jack O'Lantern Pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) is a classic heirloom variety celebrated for its bright orange color, uniform size, and perfect shape for carving. These medium-sized pumpkins typically weigh between 10–20 pounds and feature smooth, slightly ribbed skin, making them ideal for Halloween decorations and jack-o’-lantern carving. The sturdy, upright vines produce high yields of attractive, round pumpkins with moderately thick, easy-to-carve walls. In addition to decorative use, the sweet, tender flesh can be used for cooking and baking.

Growing Instructions

Direct-sow Jack O'Lantern Pumpkin seeds outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 70°F. Sow seeds 1 inch deep in rich, well-draining soil. Space plants 3–5 feet apart in rows 6–10 feet apart, as vines need room to sprawl. Pumpkins thrive in full sun and require consistent moisture, especially during fruit development. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and reduce weeds. Harvest when the pumpkins are fully orange, firm, and the skin is hard enough to resist puncture with a fingernail. Cut the stem, leaving a few inches attached for better storage.
