Red Malabar Spinach (Basella rubra) is a vigorous, vining heirloom vegetable known for its vibrant red stems, glossy, succulent green leaves, and mild, slightly peppery flavor. Unlike true spinach, this heat-loving plant thrives in warm climates and produces continuously throughout the summer. The lush, climbing vines can reach up to 10 feet when trellised, making it both a productive and ornamental addition to gardens. The leaves are thick and slightly mucilaginous, similar to okra, and are perfect for salads, stir-fries, and soups.

  • Ornamental: Beautiful red vines add a splash of color to trellises and fences.

Growing Instructions

Start Red Malabar Spinach seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date or sow directly outdoors once the soil has warmed. Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep in seed-starting mix, maintaining a temperature of 75–85°F for optimal germination. Transplant seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the soil is consistently warm. Space plants 12–18 inches apart. Red Malabar Spinach thrives in full sun but tolerates partial shade, especially in hot climates. Provide a sturdy trellis for the vines to climb. Harvest the tender leaves regularly to encourage new growth. The more you pick, the more it produces.
